Sunlight and heat haze inside a residential attic beneath the roof deck

How hot should a Texas attic get?

A vented attic in North Texas can run far hotter than the outdoor air on a summer afternoon. Everything you keep up there — ducts, air handlers, storage — operates in that environment. Attic strategy is one of the highest-leverage decisions in a Texas home.

Every recommendation traces back to something we measured.

Likely causes

What's usually behind it

Roof solar gain

Direct sun on the roof deck radiates heat into the attic space all day and into the evening.

Ventilation that does not match the design

Mixed or unbalanced ventilation can move less air than assumed, or pull conditioned air out of the house.

Equipment located in the heat

Air handlers and ducts in a superheated attic lose capacity before delivering air.

Insufficient ceiling-plane sealing

Without air sealing below the insulation, attic air communicates directly with the living space.

What we check

  • Attic temperature relative to outdoor conditions
  • Insulation type, depth and coverage
  • Ceiling-plane air-leakage pathways
  • Existing ventilation configuration
  • Duct and equipment location and condition
  • Roof-deck construction and suitability for foam

Improvements that resolve it

  • Ceiling-plane air sealing before adding insulation
  • Blown or batt insulation to a specified depth
  • Open-cell or closed-cell roof-deck spray foam
  • Conditioned (unvented) attic conversion where the assembly allows
  • Relocating or better insulating attic ductwork

Questions

Common questions

Is a radiant barrier enough?

It can help with radiant gain, but it does not address air leakage or duct losses. We recommend it only where it fits the larger strategy.

Does spray foam let me downsize HVAC?

It frequently reduces the calculated load. Whether that translates into smaller equipment depends on the load calculation for your specific home.
