Conditioned attics explained

Moving the thermal boundary from the ceiling to the roof deck brings ductwork inside the conditioned envelope — a significant change with real requirements.

What changes

Insulating at the roof deck and sealing the attic removes most of the extreme temperature swing that degrades duct and equipment performance. The attic becomes a semi-conditioned part of the house.

What has to be checked first

Roof condition and age, existing ventilation, moisture strategy, combustion appliances and code requirements all need review before conversion. Done carelessly, an unvented assembly creates new problems.

  • Roof age and any active leaks
  • Combustion appliance venting and safety
  • Moisture and drying strategy for the assembly
  • Conditioning or dehumidification of the new attic space
